B.    Objectives for this lesson – 2.N.3.1 Identify the parts of a set and area that represent fractions for halves, thirds, and fourths.

1.    At the end of this activity, students will have the knowledge to comprehend fractions and be able to use a 3D pie as a visual and tactile aid to analyze pictures and write fractions out.

C.   Materials and Resources

·      Smartboard
·      3D printer
·      Pie – One - Whole, Two – 1/2, Three – 1/3, Four – 1/4
·      Fraction Worksheet
·      Kahoot
·      Socrative
·      iPads

D.   Instruction

a.     Introduction –
                                               i.     5 minutes – I will begin my lesson by showing the students an educational YouTube video that teaches denominator and numerator in fractions.
ii.     10 minutes – I will then review the fractions with the students by writing fractions on the smartboard and ask them to draw the fraction.  I will also draw a picture and ask them what fraction is shaded.  By the end of the lesson the students will have the knowledge parts of a set and be able to place the numerator and denominator in the correct location of a fraction.

b.    Instructional process – 10 minutes – I will hand out the worksheet to each student for them to complete.  Students will need to shade the fraction shown on the worksheet.  I will give each student a pie with different pieces so that they can use to help them to do the worksheet.  I will walk around the classroom to monitor and help struggling students.

c.     Closure – 5 minutes – I will close the lesson by giving each student an opportunity to review and reflect on his or her learning.

E.    Assessment –
1.     5 minutes – I will have a Kahoot! Game created.  I will have all students login with the pin on their individual iPads.  We will then play the game.  will display the main screen on the Smartboard.
2.     5 minutes – I will then have the students play a space race game on Socrative.com.  They will again each login on their individual iPads.  I will display the main screen on the Smartboard.

Little do they know that I am assessing them with these games.  I will know who is struggling and who has mastered this skill.

F.    Modifications/Accommodations –

1.     I will allow students to work in partners and in small groups.
2.     I will allow students to use visuals to increase comprehension.
3.     I will use technology to fill in gaps in background knowledge.
4.     I will repeat, rephrase and/or paraphrase key points.
5.     I will provide extended wait time for processing instructions for students that are English language learners.

3D Printing Technology

3D Printing is a beneficial resource to have in the classroom.  I believe that 3D printing technology has made a major influence on students’ lives and schools.  The Makerbot 3D printer can make so many things that can make learning fun and hands-on for students by having a visual aid.  Every student learns differently.  The ones that learn visual will be the ones to benefit the most out of 3D printing.  It can make manipulatives for students to use and learn from.  It is a very creative tool to use.  I found a lesson plan about fractions.  A pie was made and cut into different pieces with a fraction written on each piece.  Teachers are able to design the pie shape any way they want it with any fraction.  3D printing can be used for any grade level and any subject.  3D printing may take some time getting used, but once teachers know how to work it effectively, they will be using it a lot.  There are many free lesson plans that can be found on Thingiverse.  3D Printers are expensive, but the great thing is that there are many grants, scholarships, and awards that schools can apply for.  The 2020 Makerbot Grant Guide can be found on the Makerbot website.

Questions on Technology Articles

TPACK
Why do we keep wanting to change the technology being used?
Why is there always a better way of learning?
Will technology in the classroom ever be “transparent” again?

Net Generation
Why is there insufficient exposure to new technologies in teacher preparation programs?
Why do teachers have moderate confidence with technology?
Why is it that technology is used so easily informally, but hard to put to use formally?

Teaching and Technology
Are we all jumping on the bandwagon regarding technology?
Do we really want technology taking over people’s jobs?
Is technology actually deskilling teachers?

Google Classroom

I believe that as a teacher, as the learner and as the parent, Google Classroom is a great resource to use in the classroom.  The great thing about using Google Classroom is that it is free.  All teachers have to do is create a Google account, then create their Google Classroom.  Teachers are then able to post assignments for students.  Teachers can keep track of who has turned in assignments and post grades on the website.   This can also be a reminder for students.  Everything that is said in the classroom can then be put on Google Classroom so that students can go back and look at the assignments.  Students can turn in assignments and see their grades. I also believe that it would be a good way for parents to see if their children were turning in their work and be able to keep track of their grades.  I had heard of Google Classroom before but had never put any interest into it.  Now with the pandemic, many schools have chosen to use Google Classroom for distance learning.  Google Classroom was being used at the schools in Booker before the pandemic.  Since it was a tool that was already being used, it was easy to continue distance learning.  I believe that Google Classroom will be used more in the classroom now after the pandemic. I think that Google Classroom is very user friendly and easy to navigate.   It is very similar to D2L that is used for our courses now at OPSU.  I really like D2L, so I know that using Google Classroom in classrooms will be a great tool.

Technology Reflection

Although technology may be a very helpful tool now, in the future it may strike us with problems that we may need to be deal with.  We now have the world at our fingertips.  Technology is used every day by almost everyone.  I believe that it has greatly changed how children interact.  Children do not know how to play outside anymore.  They are attached to their devices instead of riding their bikes or playing with friends.  Children should have limits with technology.  My daughter is always on her tablet.  I have her get on education apps, but I know that most of the time she’s not even using those apps.  Instead, she’s playing games or watching videos.  That is not how I remember my childhood being.  Also, I have seen many times when every single family member is on their phone instead of talking to each other.  This is where abusing the power of technology comes in.

Even though technology may seem like a bad thing for children and how it is used, technology is a great tool when used in education and medicine.  There are many tools that are used during the day by teachers for their classrooms.  Also, there now most classrooms that have one-on-one devices for students to use.  With distance learning happening everywhere, technology is what has helped teachers keep up with lesson plans for their students.  Technology is also a great tool used in medicine.  It’s is constantly being used to come up with new techniques for different procedures.  It is changing the world for the better.
